Make Money Online Writing: Introduction

If you’re looking for a way to make money online writing – maybe enough to leave your day job – one alternative is to offer writing services to other marketers. Even if you just consider yourself a half-decent blogger, there are likely a plethora of ways for you to earn money.

Content is king, as the saying goes, but not everyone is happy or even capable of creating it. They’re always looking for new ways to improve the quality of their website material, and one of the best ways to do so is to hire a writer to do it for them.

We’ll look at some of the ways you can make money by writing in this article, as well as some of the best places to find buyers for your work.

Let’s get this party started.

Make Money Online Writing: Writing As A Business Has Its Benefits

Going into the “writing industry” has a number of significant advantages.

  • It’s in high demand.
  • You will find out more about the industry (s)
  • It is possible to find partners.

For starters, writing is in high demand. More advertisers are searching for high-quality content for their websites than there are authors who can provide it.

Sure, finding writers on sites like Elance or oDesk is easy, but if you’ve ever tried it yourself, you’ve probably been disappointed by the low quality of many of those writers.

Some of them aren’t native English speakers, and others simply have a bad work ethic – but the truth remains that if you have high-quality content and are meticulous about your work, you can quickly distinguish yourself from 95% of your “competition.”

Then there’s learning about markets. I use the plural because you can learn a lot about internet marketing and any industries that you write about by doing so.

If you consistently produce high-quality material, you’ll be able to collaborate with some good – and possibly well-known – marketers. They’ll always ask you to write about topics about which they’re passionate, and you can learn a lot from seeing how they work.

Believe me when I say that the first time you write an ebook or study for someone and they turn something you paid $250 for into a $5,000 payday will open your eyes to the possibilities.

In a similar vein, you will often leverage your working relationships into new collaborations. Writing is also a turning stone to bigger and better stuff, as successful marketers realize. Since they know you and the quality of your work, if you work with a marketer by writing for them and then graduate to developing and selling your own goods, the marketer is far more likely to partner with you as an associate or JV (joint venture) partner.

Make Money Online Writing: Writing Styles

Marketers are looking for a variety of different kinds of writing. Any or more of the following forms of content are available to you:

  • Articles
  • Reports
  • eBooks
  • Copywriting
  • Spinning
  • Blog posts
  • Autoresponder emails

Some of these have a higher level of expertise than others. For example, copywriting necessitates a collection of skills that not all authors possess. Articles and blog posts, on the other hand, can be written by almost anyone (provided they are comfortable with the topic, of course).

These various levels of expertise can also influence how much you will charge for your services. Article writers who are considered “highly paying” can charge between $25 and $50 per 500-word article.

Highly compensated copywriters, on the other hand, will make $10,000 or more for a single sales letter, plus a percentage of the sales in some cases.

If you’re just getting started with your writing career, you won’t be able to command those kinds of rates until you’ve proven yourself, but it’s something to strive for. The majority of top-paid writers began their careers as entry-level employees, just like everybody else.

Articles and blog posts are usually the easiest job to come by when you’re first starting out. There are a plethora of ways to market yourself as an article writer (which we’ll go through in the next section), and there’s a seemingly endless supply of advertisers and website owners looking for quality material.

For many authors, reports and ebooks are also common types of material. Internet marketers love all of these types of material, and they’re still searching for writers who can make it.

Copywriting has already been listed as one of the higher-paying types of material, but in order to get paid well, you must have a track record. It’s possible that the first few sales letters you write won’t bring in as much money, but if they convert well and you can create a portfolio of good sales sites, it won’t be long before you can start charging more.

In certain aspects, autoresponder emails are similar to copywriting, but they will differ depending on the end goal. Many marketers don’t know how to write successful emails, or they don’t know enough about a specific niche to write them well, so delivering this form of content can also result in some very lucrative clients.

Marketers that create niche email lists are typically involved in several markets. Through engaging with advertisers who need emails written for them, you might be able to get a lot of work.

Spinning is a unique type of content that not everyone is familiar with.

In the world of internet marketing, article spinning is a touchy topic. Some people swear by it, while others believe it is a “black hat” strategy they will never employ.

Spinning is the method of rewriting a base, or seed, article with several iterations of each sentence or even word substitutes, all while using a specific format for those alternatives. This “spun” article is fed into specialised software known as a “spinner,” which generates one or more specific versions.

How well the article is rewritten will decide its degree of uniqueness, and this is where many advertisers struggle when using spun material. You can end up with a version that isn’t distinct enough from the original or, worse, doesn’t make sense if you don’t use enough substitutes or aren’t careful with the words you use.

Make Money Online Writing: What Are Your Options For Selling Your Writing

You can sell your writing in a variety of places, some of which are more lucrative than others. The first thing you can think about is your current clients. This one might not work right away if you’re just starting out, but after you’ve done a few jobs, you should have a list of clients you can return to whenever you have free time to write.

Along those lines, make sure you collect your customers’ details – at the very least their name and email address – so you can reach them later. They’ll thank you for it, and it’ll be a win-win situation for both of you.

Your clients will have a writer they can trust to produce high-quality content on time, and you’ll have a list of people with whom you’ve already collaborated and appreciate what they’re looking for.

Often check with your current clients to see if they have any work for you before going out looking for new clients.

Referrals are another way your current clients can assist you in generating further sales. Even if it’s just letting them know that you’re available if they know someone who needs writing, you can still ask your clients for referrals.

Marketers who need writing services but do not have a reliable writer will often seek suggestions from their internet marketing friends and associates. If your clients are satisfied with your work, they are likely to recommend you to others.

To really snowball your referrals, you can also give referral incentives. If you pay a “finder’s fee” or give a certain amount of free writing for each referral a current customer sends you, you can speed up the process significantly.

There are some effective places to turn if you’re looking for new buyers, whether you’re just starting out or your current clients aren’t looking for any new content at the moment.

Forums are one of the easiest ways to find potential customers. There are several internet marketing forums to choose from, and many of them have parts where you can advertise your services.

If you’ve been interested in internet marketing for some amount of time, you’ve probably heard of the Warriors For Hire. Warriors For Hire is a sub-domain on the web where you can post an ad for your services. You may also use the Warriors For Hire Special Offers section to provide a discount on your writing services.

This is only one example; there are several other forums with similar sections.

However, there are a few caveats to forum marketing.

To begin, you must participate in the forum and become well-known. It’s doubtful that you’ll find many clients if you just post once in a while or enter and instantly post an ad for your services.

People like to collaborate with people they already know. You can get to know people on a platform even though you’ve never met them in person. To become popular, post frequently and communicate with others.

Another advantage of participating on a daily basis is that people will be able to see the consistency of your writing through your forum posts. This can serve as a real-time portfolio of your work.

The second thing to keep in mind when selling on forums is to avoid those with a “cheap is better” mentality. In many ways, the Warrior Forum suffers from this dilemma. Members of the WSO segment have been conditioned to prepare to pay rock-bottom rates for highly valued goods. This can also be applied to other areas of the forum, such as Warriors For Hire.

This isn’t to say you won’t find high-paying clients on these forums; rather, it’s a cautionary note. Instead, you could get a better return on investment by participating in other forums.

Freelance websites like Elance.com and oDesk.com are another good place to look for potential clients. These websites act as a “middleman” between freelancers and people seeking to employ them. By moderating the jobs and serving as a sort of escrow service for the payments, they offer a level of protection for all parties.

The disadvantage is that they charge a fee for this service. That charge is deducted from the service provider’s (your) bill, so you’re effectively paying them to locate new clients on your behalf.

The most successful way to use these platforms is to find potential customers, who you can then work with directly once you’ve established a working relationship with them. Since you are not paying a premium to the freelance sites, you might be able to give a slightly lower rate.

If you pay them a 10% fee for any job you do, for example, you might give your client a 5% discount for working together directly and still make more money.

If you decide to go this route, just be cautious. Some freelance sites, such as Fiverr.com, have restrictions on moving projects offsite in the future. By discussing this with your customers, you want to make sure you’re not violating any rules.

Creating PLR, or Private Label Rights, offers is another fascinating way to sell your writing.

The term “private label rights” refers to the buyers’ ability to use the material in almost any way they see fit. They can edit it as they see fit, add their own name to it, and generally treat it as though it were their own material.

PLR’s drawback from the buyer’s viewpoint is one of its greatest benefits from the seller’s (your) perspective:

The rights to the same content can be purchased by several individuals.

From the buyer’s viewpoint, this means that the material can be sold, used as web content, given away, and so on. In comparison to having exclusive access to the content, this causes some rivalry.

However, as the seller, you have the option of selling the same content several times. This means you can charge a lower price and still make a profit.

Consider the following scenario: you’ve written ten 500-word posts. If you sold them to a single client for $20 per article (4 cents per word), you’d make $200. If you packaged those ten articles together and sold them as a PLR bundle for $10 ($1 per article), you’d only need to sell 20 copies to make the same amount of money.

If the articles are on a common subject and the content is strong, you should be able to find more than 20 buyers. Indeed, you could sell 100 copies or more, producing far more sales with the same amount of effort.

However, there is another advantage of selling PLR material: you get your writing in front of a much larger audience, some of whom might be hunting for exclusive content. If they see how well-written your PLR posts are, it’s very likely that they’ll want to collaborate with you on exclusive projects as well.

Consider PLR as a “front end” bid, with your writing services as a “upsell” on the back end.

Make Money Online Writing: What Do You Charge for Your Services?

How much to charge for your work is a major question on many writers’ minds, particularly when they’re just getting started. Many people find it difficult to make this decision. After all, they want to make as much money as possible and can believe their work is valuable. Buyers may not want to pay high-end prices until they’ve had a chance to prove themselves.

  • For a 500-word post, 1 cent per word equals $5.
  • For a 500-word post, 2 cents per word equals $10.
  • 5 cents per word equals $25 for a 500-word post, and so on.

For longer types of material, the same calculations will be used. A 2,500-word paper, for example, will cost $125 at 5 cents per word.

When it comes to setting your rates, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first question is, what kind of competition do you face? One of the forums I visit has a section called “Writers for Hire,” where the majority of the writers charge one cent per word. There’s a good chance you wouldn’t get many takers if you made a $5 per word bid there.

Another thing to think about is whether or not people are familiar with your abilities and work quality. If not, you can need to start at a lower price to gain experience and demonstrate your worth to potential clients.

Making a “introductory” bid at a lower price than you usually charge, and making it explicit in the offer itself, is a smart tactic in this situation. Make it clear that this is a limited-time deal, and that all future work will be at your normal rates.

You’ll almost certainly attract some buyers who are only interested in working with you because of the discount, but you’ll also definitely attract some buyers who will want to work with you at your normal rates once they’ve seen the quality of your work.

When you need to find new customers, this sort of deal can be a nice way to bring some more into your “funnel.” When your writing business grows, you’ll quickly realize that you can only work with a certain amount of people at a given time. You can ideally have a few more frequent clients than you can accommodate at any given time. You will always keep your writing schedule full without having to look for new work if you do it this way.

Make Money Online Writing: Specializing

Specializing in a specific niche or subject is the final approach we’ll address in this article. If you are an expert in a specific market, you should consider writing exclusively for that market, particularly if it is profitable. You may, for example, focus solely on health and weight loss issues.

There are a few benefits of using this strategy:

  • It’s also easier to write about subjects you’re already acquainted with.
  • Since you’re an expert, you can charge extra.

Since you won’t have to do as much homework if you choose a subject you’re familiar with, the writing process would be much quicker. And the quality of your writing will be significantly higher than if you’re writing about subjects about which you have only a cursory understanding based on some basic research.

You may also charge extra for your writing since it will be of better quality. Your customers will be able to pay the higher prices because they will be getting real expert material.

Make Money Online Writing: Conclusion

There will still be a demand for high-quality writing, despite all of the automation tools available for creating websites and populating them with content. If you enjoy writing and can deliver high-quality work to your clients, you’ll have an almost limitless demand for your services.

The toughest part is getting started. If you have some experience and satisfied customers under your belt, you can turn that into a full-time writing company if that is your ultimate aim.

Keep in mind that the internet is all about content. That is unlikely to change in the near future, so if you can assist other advertisers by delivering the content they need, your services will be in high demand for a long time.
