live from Las Vegas it’s the cube crossing you I pat forward America’s 2019 brought to you by uipath hi everybody welcome back to Las Vegas were at the Bellagio at uipath forward three day two of the cube plasters the cube is a world leader in live tech coverage we go out to the events we remove the signal from the racket Erik Alexis here is the vice president of global rational process automation at GE Eric thanks for coming on yeah perfectly agitated to be here so you guys have a co e you’re clearly heavily involved and essentially running the co e is that title yep yeah that’s my capacity at G I result our world-wide middle of excellence for smart process automation you know our pilgrimage started with uipath a while back in 2016 so it’s been an incredible journey still further and I want to get into that so what’s the before I do I you know I was struck by the Forrester specialist Craig LeClair this morning I issued a statement I know if you’re in there but he said yeah co e setting up a co e maybe that’s too maybe that’s asking too much but I talk to a lot of parties that did have a center of excellence maybe it’s definitional but what does your co e look like in terms of precisely you know it’s roster length yeah it’s a great question so I think in terms of the role that highway more broadly I means that we afford a lot of the technical expertise the handson development and the operational support for our business legions and so you know we’ve really kind of developed that knowledge over duration and we use our business measurements to truly drive and identify the opportunities that come in through the co e so you know in terms of the size of the co e we’ve got you know in total number of heads we’ve got about 50 technological primarily technical resources there that are supporting development as well as ongoing operation formidable okay so let’s let’s talk about your expedition when did it start you know what was the motivation behind it how did you reach the business case and yeah we’ll get into it yeah so our pilgrimage started back in 2016 you know we G you know we used to have a shared services organization that you know we had a particularly forwardthinking CEO at the time we wanted to really disrupt the way that we worked and so our PA was something that was just coming out and kind of getting noticed by a lot of these shared services organizations and so you know throughout the year we assessed a couple of technologies patently arriving on UI path for a number of reas

ons I would say in terms of our travel 2017 was various kinds of our time to prove the technology we wanted to see if this material could really work long term and operate at proportion considering the fact that I’m still here apparently we proved that was correct and then 2018 was kind of the year of scaling and operationalizing various kinds of a a sustainable representation to assistance our business parts across the board from an RPA standpoint so really improving out a suitable structure structure out the governance that get along with building robots and constructing a kind of a resource team to continue to support the bots that that you know we were at scale at that point so maintaining those bots is critically important and then you know 2019 have already been the year and you are well aware I recall the theme of this conference in general a bot for all persons I think that’s the direction we’re moving in 2019 we’ve kind of perfected the notions of the back office robot and the development of those and racing those at flake and now we’re moving towards you know a whole new market share when it comes to attended automation and citizen evolution so in 16 it was kind of kicking the tires was almost for the Gandhi yeah right and then and then 17 was a really essentially a proofofconcept right so still a small team a two piece of crew kind of thing yeah right and then when you talked about scale helped us understand what’s involved in scale I know it’s also another large-hearted topic of this conference are what are the challenges of scaling and how did you resolve those yeah that’s a very good question I think it’s a question that he’s been very common throughout this entire conference I would say you know when I “ve been thinking about” scaling what I’ve noticed over the past few years is that you know the actual bot growing is about 25 percent of the task that it is required to do right when it comes to scale there is everything outside of the actual development is the important part so how are you funneling opportunities into a pipeline how are you streamlining the entire process reengineering of you know fitting an RPA into an existing process you know what is what are the governance that what’s the governance you have in place to made to ensure that the system of that development is clean and can be maintained long term and then most importantly I think that parties ignore you are well aware parties think of scale is being able to develop a lot of BOTS I consider most importantly what scale is is being able to efficiently maintain a large portfolio BOTS and that’s what I’ve realized this year we’ve got now about 300 automations in creation and you know your reputation as an organization is really on how well you maintain those casket because if your bots are consistently failing and you’re not fixing them quick enough for your functional customers to leverage them then you lose a lot of credibility so I think that’s been a big discover for us as we reach scale that’s interesting I entail I “ve been thinking about” scripts how fragile scripts are and you got a lot of them and and they almost always break yeah and so what is the discipline that allows you to have that caliber of bots that is maintainable is it a is it a coding punish is it the governance is there other automation involved in maintaining yes no there is and I speculate the team that’s it’s under my technological team has done a extraordinary undertaking of designating this up but we’ve got some very rigorous standards that we’ve put in place around you know we do have reusable components for example that need to be used on every single robot that goes into production so that you know when I look at for example a carton login that Box login is gonna be the same across all my box so every make who’s going to be maintaining that bot knows what it is and how to fix it I mull the standardized logging as well to make sure that we’ve got robust entering for every single robot is incredibly important because again that’s good critical when soul goes to try and fix the bottom so you like an app accumulation enforcing regulates like Apple for makes exactly okay so let me ask a question see now several years in if you had a mulligan what the hell is you what would you do differently yeah I think that’s a another very good question I think you know when you first start with this technology it’s unbelievably exciting you know because it’s something that you can immediately watch significant differences and the impact it can make and so you want to try and apply it everywhere to everything to solve every problem and I think that’s kind of where we got a little ahead of ourselves we we weren’t as thoughtful as we should have been when we started taking in the the use examples that we were bringing in and while I sit here and tell you that we’ve got 300 automations in creation I’ve also decommissioned about 90 automations as well because you know you kind of live and you learn as you go through that process on this doesn’t make sense for our PA it’s not driving the importance anymore it’s not driving the privilege price for the company and is that because the the process is not needs to be reworked before it’s automated or there other factors yeah I think there’s a duet aftermath was there I judge number one some BOTS are intentionally just for shortterm use right we look across the portfolio some bots you design for you know to operate for two weeks for a big for example document transition or something like that so that’s a common rationale for decommissioning I would say secondly you just picked the wrong process it’s not big enough you know you you think this is perfect for our PA but it’s saving somebody perhap you are well aware five or ten minutes a week which in reality do you really want to employ all the effort and to continue to maintain something like that on a back office level so I contemplate the size of the processes of the intricacy you’ve got to be astute about as well thinking about you know a bot for every worker yeah what does that actually look like is that like you get a laptop and are you gonna bot again how does that actually manifest it yeah you are well aware I think you know as I’ve talked to some of the teams and Daniel as well about this it’s really around I convey imagine opening it up just like any other you know application on your computer and Excel you know you’ve got that sitting on your desktop and you use that for a number of different things I think that’s kind of how I imagined it and everyone when they come into ge they’ll get their laptop and it’s part of their and a package of software that they get one of them will be uipath and I think you know again if GE were I be understood that as the future we’ve got to be courteou about how that’s wheeled out because you know you want to make sure it’s done the right way and you want to make sure that that supersedes and and what comes along with that is a lot of Education there’s a lot of parties that need to be educated on the technology in order to roll that out impressions so it’s part of the onboarding duty is part of the HR on onboarding and so you open up your laptop and based on your capacity you’ll have a library of bots that are applicable for your job is that kind of what you and more you know again I think that’s kind of the future state and so HR will have a common library that they can draw from and Finance will have a common library that they can gather from and you know I fantasize the proclamation this weekend of or this week of our studio behaves is gonna acquire life greatly easier so if you need to kind of edit any of those components or or make any custom gradations you can do that with CDOs but I judge having a prebuilt cause of of container by perform would be extremely in here and studiox is the citizen developer right so okay so now how and how do you then enforce the precepts of the co e if you know if they’ve volantes writing automations that’s it’s it’s honestly a question that we haven’t answered hitherto and I think that’s the part that we’re trying to solve for now to roll it out more broadly and I contemplate one of the purposes of its gonna be training right drilling the broader group part of it is you know paying them access to front office robots and so you you do have the system back at the orchestrator so that you can see kind of what’s going on and and make sure if there are big mutates that need to be made you can represent some of that centrally so I envision figuring out how to centrally maintain and collect some of that system is gonna be import

ant and the idea of moving beyond this what they call this morning the snowflake into the snowball so reusable ingredients is something that I’ve heard a lot about that’s not negligible yeah right because he delineating the freedom ingredient of the human rights position this is always going to be some kind of unique not always there could be some unique element you know he was working so what are your thoughts on various kinds of futures I mean we touched on some of them it sounds like even though you started early 2016 it sounds like you still got a long way to go it’s a road map look like for you guys well it’s really neverending because you know you see how quickly the industry is changing and how quickly these automation scaffolds I think you know we’re at the top now or these are no longer are PA programmes they’re automation platforms with all of the different features and you know you look at the broader ecosystem of the technologies being drawn into play I think it’s you know moving from robotics process automation into rational process automation and that’s really our goal and you know leveraging the ecosystem that the UI path is built is I think what we want to do more of going in the primary measurement of value to you I’m inferring his time saved from doing non distinguished tasks is that really a key metric or are there others that you row dollars that you’re saving I consider the route that we quantify productivity is genuinely in three major buckets one is the hours saved so that employees can do other things and I would say that is far and away the largest bucket that “were having” but I judge additionally you’ve got to think about direct costs out I want if my investment squad comes to me and says you know we’re thinking about hiring a person to do this you know why not an RPA you know I can’t we use an RPA to do that instead so you know it’s not like anyone’s losing their activity over it it’s just figuring out a better style to augment your existing personnel then I would say the third way really is thinking about the conformity point of things so and that’s often overlooked you may not save anyone time you may not save anyone hours or dollars but what you can do is you know expand for example in your review function its expand your testing or sampling of you know a certain criteria instead of sampling perhaps the top 20 risky you know parts you can now sample a hundred percent of local populations which basically deepens how you can get comfortable with your financial statements and other elements of the talking earlier was just I requested this this sampling dead yeah because there are four you hey right it really you know Eric super versed I really appreciate you coming on and have graduations on all your success certainly thanks Dave I regard you’re welcome all right keep it right to everybody will be back where the next client right up to this short break we’re live from UI path forward three from Las Vegas you watching the cube
